Currently, two primary populations of Red-crowned cranes exist. One population is non-migratory and resides in northern Japan on Hokkaido Island. The other population breeds in Russia, northeastern China, and Mongolia, undertaking migrations to eastern China, North Korea, and South Korea for the winter season.

Being predominantly aquatic, Red-crowned cranes exhibit distinct behavior.
