Encontrei o rabilargo-de-cauda-ruiva, uma das aves mais especiais e significativas para mim. Embora não seja tão ricamente marcada como algumas outras espécies, essa pequena ave possui um encanto próprio que me cativou desde o primeiro momento.

Minha busca pelo rabilargo-de-cauda-ruiva me levou a explorar uma paisagem exuberante, cheia de vida e diversidade. O chapim-de-ventre-ruivo foi uma das aves que nunca conseguimos observar de perto: essa é mais ou menos a visão que tivemos através dos binóculos.

Balang Shan (5040 m or 16,535 feet high; Balang Shan Pass is at 4481 m or 14,577 feet)

Esta foi uma das paradas mais importantes da excursão, pois tivemos a oportunidade de passar muito tempo e percorrer muitos quilômetros em altitudes acima de 4000 metros, cerca de 13.100 pés. Muitas das aves mais interessantes habitam essas altitudes durante o verão. O clima durante nossa viagem foi geralmente bom, embora tenhamos sido prejudicados pela neblina nos dois primeiros dias aqui. Passamos três dias e uma manhã aqui; o alvo mais difícil era o monal chinês. O problema é que fotógrafos chineses em grande número – incluindo aqueles que não são observadores de aves e não sabem como se comportar para não assustar as aves – desenvolveram um interesse intenso pela fotografia de aves e, em particular, pelo monal chinês. No final, tivemos sucesso em fotografar o monal chinês de uma distância razoavelmente próxima, mas a neblina e as multidões não ajudaram.

O monal chinês foi a nossa ave da vida. Após dois dias de neblina, o terceiro dia amanheceu claro e partimos em busca do monal chinês com renovada esperança. Mary avistou nossa ave da vida a cerca de uma milha de distância, em uma encosta distante. Nosso motorista também a encontrou por conta própria. Conseguimos registrar a espécie, mas é claro que até mesmo as fotos com teleobjetiva a essa distância são terríveis. Por isso, continuamos tentando obter uma visão mais próxima pelo resto desse dia e mais uma manhã, até que finalmente tivemos sucesso.

O único “ponto quente” local para visualizações de perto do monal era essa estrada secundária que se tornou obsoleta e, portanto, foi abandonada após a construção de um túnel através da colina retratada. A entrada descendente do túnel é o grande tubo no lado direito da imagem. A saída ascendente está fora de vista à esquerda, contornando a linha da colina. A busca pelo monal exigia caminhar por essa estrada secundária, escolhendo um local que a experiência do nosso guia sugeriu que poderia funcionar. Também exigia evitar as multidões de fotógrafos, que falam muito e (argh!) fumam cigarros.

Este é um panorama de aproximadamente 150 graus da cordilheira Balangshan. As sete imagens individuais não se encaixam perfeitamente, mas isso ainda dá uma impressão da bela vista do local onde encontramos o monal chinês (subindo a encosta bem à direita desta imagem). Role para a direita para ver o panorama completo. À extrema direita está a estrada secundária Monal, atravessando um vale. O passo Balangshan está completamente fora de vista atrás da colina à direita e possui uma elevação quase 1000 m mais alta do que o local onde esta foto foi tirada. As montanhas mais altas nesta imagem têm uma altitude um pouco menor que a de Balangshan, ou seja, quase 5000 m ou mais de 16.000 pés de altura.

Nesta foto tirada na estrada secundária Monal, podemos ver Mary ao lado do nosso guia, Xiongrui (“Sissi”) Tang. Observe como, como na maior parte de Sichuan, as camadas de rochas estão inclinadas quase verticalmente. Elas devem ter sido depositadas horizontalmente no fundo de um grande corpo de água (basicamente um oceano) e, então, à medida que a Índia começou a mergulhar sob a Ásia, foram levantadas e inclinadas. As camadas aparentemente nunca foram derretidas, pois mesmo camadas finíssimas são bem definidas e se dividem de forma limpa. Imagine o tempo e as forças necessárias para mover centenas de milhas de rochas, erguê-las em dezenas de milhares de pés e incliná-las em cerca de 90 graus. Isso é evidente em toda Sichuan; outras fotos neste site mostram exemplos adicionais. As camadas verticais explicam por que muitas montanhas do Himalaia – especialmente nesta região – têm encostas incrivelmente íngremes. As rochas tendem a se desgastar e se dividir ao longo das fronteiras das camadas.

Essa rocha em particular chamou minha atenção. Ela parecia ter sido torturada ao longo de milhões de anos, curvada pela intensa pressão resultante do mergulho da Índia sob a Ásia. É incrível pensar nos processos geológicos que moldaram essa formação ao longo do tempo.

A região em que nos encontrávamos era logo abaixo da linha de neve, e o contraste entre a rocha retorcida e a paisagem coberta de neve era simplesmente deslumbrante. Foi uma experiência única testemunhar os efeitos da elevação do planalto tibetano e a influência dos processos geológicos em ação.

Olá a todos! Hoje eu gostaria de compartilhar uma experiência bastante peculiar que vivenciamos durante nossa passagem pelo Passo Balangshan. Foi uma verdadeira aventura, principalmente por conta das condições climáticas desfavoráveis que encontramos.

O Passo Balangshan é conhecido por sua beleza impressionante, mas também pode ser um desafio em condições climáticas adversas. Infelizmente, fomos surpreendidos por um clima bastante hostil durante nossa visita. Porém, o que tornou essa experiência ainda mais interessante foi a necessidade de fazer uma visita de emergência ao menor banheiro da montanha, localizado no pequeno prédio à direita do centro.

Imaginem só, em meio a ventos fortes e neve intensa, precisar correr para encontrar abrigo no diminuto edifício. Foi uma situação engraçada, porém um tanto desafiadora. Ainda assim, demos o nosso melhor para enfrentar essa situação inusitada.

Apesar das circunstâncias adversas, não deixamos que isso estragasse a nossa aventura. Afinal, faz parte de viajar e explorar novos lugares lidar com situações imprevisíveis. Essas são as experiências que tornam as viagens verdadeiramente memoráveis.

Enquanto explorava a região, deparei-me com um macho dessa espécie, que estava cautelosamente evitando deslizar pela encosta coberta de neve. Sua determinação em não se deixar levar pela inclinação era notável. Ele exibia movimentos cuidadosos e precisos, evitando qualquer deslize descontrolado.

Fiquei fascinado com a habilidade desse pequeno pássaro em se equilibrar e se mover graciosamente em meio à neve. Sua plumagem vermelha vibrante contrastava lindamente com o cenário branco ao seu redor, tornando-o ainda mais deslumbrante.

Pintarroxo-estriado (Este é o pássaro de vida do John.)

Felosa-das-folhas-alpina (Este é o pássaro de vida para nós. Essa espécie é separada da felosa-das-folhas-de-tickell – por exemplo, em Arunachal Pradesh – na lista mundial de Clements.)

Olá, pessoal! Hoje eu quero compartilhar com vocês uma visão impressionante que testemunhei durante uma viagem de carro. Foi uma experiência incrível contemplar a beleza e a complexidade das formações rochosas ao longo do caminho.

Nesta foto, podemos observar mais uma formação rochosa torturada, capturada durante o percurso descrito anteriormente. É um panorama de aproximadamente 150 graus, mostrando uma curva suave em um rio, com penhascos de rocha caracteristicamente estratificada, mas também caracteristicamente dobrada.

O penhasco tem cerca de 50 metros, ou mais de 150 pés de altura, proporcionando uma imponente presença na paisagem. Uma ponte estreita, porém transitável por veículos, à direita da foto, oferece uma escala para dimensionarmos a grandiosidade do local.

Observe novamente como as camadas rochosas estão inclinadas quase verticalmente. No entanto, o destaque da imagem é a característica em forma de V no centro, e é importante ressaltar que essa formação é real, não um artefato da combinação das cinco fotos que foram mescladas para criar esse panorama.

É simplesmente impressionante refletir sobre as forças que foram necessárias para criar essa característica única. A natureza é verdadeiramente fascinante, e essa imagem nos lembra da imensa escala e poder dos processos geológicos ao longo de milhões de anos.

Mengbi Shan Forest

De Wolong, dirigimos sobre o Passo Balangshan pela última vez e depois seguimos em direção leste em direção ao Planalto Tibetano, passando por um passo a 4119 m de altitude, perto de Mengbi Shan. Na cidade de Maerkang (altitude ~ 2600 m), ficamos em um dos hotéis mais agradáveis da viagem, localizado em um subúrbio moderno. O hotel até tinha um elevador e pisos aquecidos! No dia seguinte, Mary descansou enquanto John voltou ao bosque de Mengbi Shan, quase chegando ao passo. Aqui, ele teve a sorte de conhecer John MacKinnon, autor do autoritativo “Guia de Campo das Aves da China” (Oxford University Press).

Enquanto caminhava em direção ao ponto mais alto da floresta, deparei-me com essa espécie única e magnífica. O Gigante Garrulax é conhecido por sua aparência impressionante e seu canto melodioso, e tive a sorte de registrar esses momentos em imagens.

As duas últimas fotos que compartilho com vocês foram tiradas próximo ao nosso ponto mais alto na floresta de Mengbi Shan. O pássaro estava em pleno voo, revelando sua envergadura e sua majestade em meio às árvores e à vegetação exuberante.

Observar o Gigante Garrulax em seu habitat natural foi uma experiência verdadeiramente gratificante. Essas aves possuem uma beleza singular e uma presença imponente, e cada encontro com elas é um lembrete da incrível diversidade da vida selvagem.

Tibetan Plateau and Baxi Forest

De Maerkang, dirigimos até Hongyuan, no Planalto Tibetano. Depois de muitos dias de aclimatação, foi fácil dormir a uma altitude de 3500 m = 11.520 pés, de longe a maior altitude em que já passamos uma noite.

O dia seguinte foi dominado por uma viagem muito longa até Ruoergai (altitude 3450 m) e de lá até as áreas úmidas de Ruoergai e de volta. As fotos a seguir foram tiradas durante esses dois dias.

A civilização chega ao Planalto Tibetano: Pastoreando iaques com o auxílio de motocicletas.

Our life bird is the upland buzzard. It’s worth noting the very white tail and substantially white underwings.

Mary’s life birds are the black-necked cranes. It’s worth mentioning that John had previously seen two black-necked cranes in Arunachal Pradesh back in 2016.

The bird pictured here is the Pere David’s laughingthrush, formerly known as the Plain laughingthrush.

The bird seen here is the Ground tit, formerly known as Hume’s groundpecker. This is our life bird, and we were fascinated by their behavior. Ground tits make use of abandoned nesting burrows of pikas, small mammal resembling tiny rabbits, which are found at remarkably high altitudes. Whenever we encountered Ground tits, they were often amidst large colonies of pikas. We observed them scurrying around, foraging skillfully, and returning to their burrows. It appeared that they were feeding their young, which was consistent with the season.

This Pika was captured near its burrow, one of the many dozens we encountered in the nest warren where we observed the Ground tit.

This Pika is comfortably nestled in its burrow, which can be considered a mansion compared to the other nest holes we’ve seen!

During this time, we encountered the magnificent Saker falcon, which became our life bird. Although this particular photo does not depict our life bird, we had the opportunity to observe the Saker falcon multiple times during our drive to Ruoergai.

We were fortunate to witness a remarkable sight: a Saker falcon perched on its nest, with at least one chick in tow. The image captures the nurturing behavior of these majestic birds as they tend to their young.

Observing the Saker falcon, we made an assumption that this individual was the male, diligently standing guard over the nest situated on the opposite side of the road.

One of the common avian residents found across the expansive Tibetan Plateau is the Horned Lark. These small, yet charming birds can be spotted in various habitats throughout the region. With their distinct plumage and characteristic facial markings, they add a touch of vibrancy to the high-altitude landscapes.

Horned Larks are well adapted to the harsh conditions of their habitat, often seen foraging on the barren ground for seeds and insects. Their ability to survive in such extreme environments showcases their resilience and remarkable adaptation skills.

During our journey across the Tibetan Plateau, we had numerous encounters with these delightful birds. Their melodic calls and graceful flight patterns never failed to captivate our attention. Whether spotted in open grasslands, rocky slopes, or alongside rural settlements, the Horned Larks added a touch of liveliness to the serene and awe-inspiring landscapes.

Although they may be considered a common sight on the Tibetan Plateau, each encounter with these beautiful birds was a special moment for us. Their presence served as a reminder of the incredible diversity and tenacity of life in even the most challenging environments.

As we continue our explorations, we look forward to encountering more fascinating bird species and uncovering the unique wonders that nature has to offer. The Horned Lark is just one of the many treasures that await those who venture into the breathtaking landscapes of the Tibetan Plateau.

The Rufous-necked Snowfinch, spotted at the Ruoergai wetlands, marked a special milestone for us as it became our life bird.

Baxi Forest

We had an incredible encounter with the Blue-eared Pheasant, and it instantly became a cherished addition to our life bird list. These magnificent birds captivated us with their vibrant plumage and unique features. The deep blue ear patches, contrasting with the rich chestnut body and golden crest, created a striking visual display. It was a truly unforgettable moment as we observed these elusive creatures in their natural habitat. The Blue-eared Pheasant holds a special place in our hearts, reminding us of the diverse and awe-inspiring beauty of the avian world.

In the world of bird photography, timing is everything. There are moments when you encounter a rare and beautiful bird, and you simply can’t afford to waste any time. Such was the case when we came across the magnificent Blue-eared Pheasant. The excitement was overwhelming, and there was no time to set up our tripod for that perfect shot.

In those instances, improvisation becomes the key to capturing the moment. We had to think on our feet, making use of whatever support we could find. With the help of Sissi Tang, who kindly lent a hand, we managed to steady the camera and snap our first pictures of the Blue-eared Pheasant.

It’s moments like these that remind us of the unpredictable nature of wildlife photography. Despite the challenges, we were determined to document this incredible bird and add it to our collection of memories. While the picture may not be flawless, it serves as a testament to our dedication and the exhilarating rush of capturing a life bird in its natural splendor.

The Ring-necked Pheasant we encountered in this region is unique in its own way. Unlike other subspecies, the local variant lacks the distinctive white neck ring that is commonly associated with this species.

Himalayan Griffon Vultures truly leave a lasting impression with their colossal size. These majestic birds effortlessly glide through the skies for hours, showcasing their remarkable soaring abilities. However, their initial takeoff requires a significant amount of effort and strength. Despite their challenges in getting airborne, once they are up in the sky, they become the epitome of grace and endurance. Observing these magnificent creatures in flight is a testament to the wonders of nature and the awe-inspiring beauty of the Himalayan region.

The takeoff of the Himalayan Griffon is a powerful and captivating sight. With wings spread wide, they gather their strength and initiate their ascent. They start by running with determination, pushing themselves to reach maximum speed. And then, at the crucial moment, they achieve “V1” – the takeoff point where they utilize the ground effect, using the air pressure close to the ground to aid their initial flight. It’s a remarkable display of skill and agility as these magnificent birds lift off the ground, embarking on their aerial journeys.

This is a segment of a massive gathering of over 100 raptors, gracefully drifting towards the north as they undertake their annual spring migration to their breeding habitats. Amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Tibetan Plateau, we marveled at the sight without attempting to distinguish the different species present. Captivated by the moment, we found ourselves at an elevation of approximately 4200 meters, immersed in the awe-inspiring realm of these magnificent birds.

From this vantage point, we embarked on an extensive journey towards the northern regions, bidding farewell to the Tibetan Plateau. Our route led us initially to Guangyuan, nestled at an altitude of 1200 meters, where we explored the enchanting Gongganling Forest. The following day, we continued our expedition to the lowlands near Yangxian, situated at an elevation of 470 meters. Little did we know that this final destination would yield some of the most remarkable and memorable experiences of our entire trip.

Pere David’s owl, a species we had long hoped to encounter, finally became a reality during our recent expedition. The sighting was both thrilling and challenging, as we managed to catch a glimpse of this elusive bird through a narrow and winding tunnel obscured by thick foliage. The early morning twilight added an air of mystique to the encounter, heightening our sense of awe and making the experience even more unforgettable. This magnificent owl now holds a special place in our birding journey as a cherished life bird.

The Russet sparrow, a diligent parent, dedicatedly tending to its four fledglings. It was a joy to witness their growth and development as they gradually learned to feed independently. In this photo, the chick on the right demonstrates remarkable progress. Throughout the day, we observed the chicks transitioning from solely relying on parental care to actively foraging for their own sustenance, although they still occasionally sought assistance.

The Crested ibis has become a conservation success story in China, as it faced near-extinction. In 1981, only seven individuals were known to exist, all located in Shaanxi province of China. The species was believed to be extinct in Japan, hence its Latin name Nipponia nippon. However, the discovery of those seven birds sparked conservation efforts. Today, the whole area where we observed them near Yangxian serves as a nature preserve dedicated to the ibis. The global population has significantly increased to over 3000 birds. During our time there, we encountered at least seven distinct individuals along riverbanks and in farm fields throughout the region.

It was crucial to capture swift photographs of the Crested ibis before it took flight, as its fleeting nature made it a challenge to photograph. We were fortunate to have Sissi Tang provide us with this picture.

In one of the fields close to the location where we spotted the Crested ibis, we encountered a pair of Ruddy-breasted crakes. The photographs captured here surpass the ones we took in Maguri Beel, India, where we first sighted this species and added it to our life bird list two months prior to our encounter with the current birds.

During our birding expedition, we were fortunate enough to come across the magnificent Chinese sparrowhawk, a bird that had eluded us until now. As we observed this remarkable species, one distinguishing feature caught our attention—the vibrant orange cere, the fleshy area surrounding the base of its bill. This distinct characteristic sets the Chinese sparrowhawk apart from other raptors in the region.
