Invitation from Mr. Logan:

We would welcome another couple or more (max 4 additional people) to join us on an exciting 20 day tour to Qinghai (the Tibetan Plateau) and Beidaihe and Happy Island for the peak bird migration. My wife and I are enthusiastic birders and will chasing all the Chinese specials. I also take photographs but the birds come first. We also are looking forward to visiting the Great Wall and the other Beijing tourist attractions. A short extension to Lhasa in Tibet for 5 days will complete our trip - a mix of cultural and birding time to be spent there. A 25 day trip in total.

Day 05-06__08-09.05.2015 Beidaihe     B, L, D

The coast at Beidaihe is one of the world's great migration traps, sandwiched as it is between the Bay of Bohai and the mountains and deserts of northern Hebei and Inner Mongolia. Even today, enough habitat remains to ensure that no ornithological pilgrim comes away disappointed. Scrub, a reservoir, tidal flats and a fairly extensive patch of hilly pine woodland vie for our attention as we get used to a selection of birds. The commoner migrants during early May include species such as Brown Shrike, Yellow-browed, Radde's, Dusky and Pallas's Warblers, Red-rumped Swallows, Little and Black-faced Buntings, Yellow-rumped, Mugimaki, Red-throated and Asian Brown Flycatchers, while Marsh, Wood, Green and Terek Sandpipers, Greenshank, Kentish and Little Ringed Plovers, and perhaps Oriental Pratincole and Little Whimbrel provide the main shorebird interest. Vega, Black-tailed and Heuglin's Gulls loaf on the beaches, while Asian Stubtail, Japanese and Pallas's Reed Buntings, as well as Red-throated and Pechora Pipits might be found in wetter areas.

Day 07__10.05.2015 Beidaihe to Happy Island     B, L, D

We'll start early for Happy Island, stopping a couple of times en route for birding. Masses of shorebirds should include flocks of Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Red-necked and Long-toed Stints, Far Eastern Curlew, Pacific Golden Plover, Lesser Sand Plover, Great Knot and with luck Grey-tailed Tattler, Greater Sand Plover, Grey-headed Lapwing and Asian Dowitcher will also be found in small numbers, alongside familiar species such as Spotted and Common Redshanks, Black-winged Stilt and Whimbrel, while we will always remain optimistic of finding an enigmatic Spoon-billed Sandpiper, though we shall certainly need some good fortune to find one!

3-night stay at Happy Island Hotel or similar.

Day 08-09__11-12.05.2015 Happy Island     B, L, D

Situated on the superb 'East Asia flyway', Happy Island measures a mere 4kms by 2.5 kms. For the birder, nowhere else comes close and the daily excitements that spring brings more than make up or any shortcomings in the island's accommodation during our stay.. Each day, we will see a new set of birds as one wave of migrants follows another - during our three and a bit days on the island, we expect two or three major falls involving large numbers of passerines. In addition, vagrants get caught up in the roving weather systems and turn up on the island, sometimes staying for several days. As the island is relatively small it is also the perfect place for anyone wishing to pursue special interests such as bird photography or regular wader counting.

Day 10__13.05.2015 Happy Island to Beidaihe   B, L, D

Back at Beidaihe, we'll concentrate on marshes and reed beds, a habitat type better represented here than on Happy Island and only now, later in the spring, at its best. Early starts are called for, but we can expect some great birding: Yellow and Von Schrenck's Bitterns, Purple Heron, Baillon's and Ruddy-breasted Crakes, Amur Falcon, Lanceolated, Black-browed Reed, Oriental Great Reed and Thick-billed Warblers are frequently seen.

1-night stay at 3* Jinshan Hotel or similar
